We pay homage to Australia’s original storytellers who remind us that storytelling is about deep listening. We recognise Australia’s First Nations Peoples for their ongoing connection to storytelling, country, culture, and community. We also respectfully acknowledge the traditional owners of the land on which we’re all situated and recognise that it was never ceded.

The Watcher

By Lidena Carr.

I have this little watcher,

With a head of golden curls.

Seeing all before her,

Taking in the world.

She sees the lies we tell each other,

She questions the way it is.

I don’t have all the answers,

She expects, I did.

I have this little watcher,

She has a smirk today.

She saw me tell her brother,

‘The world is just this way’.

She sees through all the stories,

We like to tell ourselves.

Once again raised eyebrows,

She sees through this as well.

Today my little watcher,

Whom I love with all my heart.

Told me I was wrong,

Points out all the stark,

Unfair world before her.

I have to say she’s right,

With eyes that see like that I’d say,

The future here is bright.

Today my chatty little watcher,

Follows me about.

And I know it’s coming,

A question I could do without.

Something that is burning,

And difficult to ask.

I need to pay attention,

Less I miss my most important task.
