We pay homage to Australia’s original storytellers who remind us that storytelling is about deep listening. We recognise Australia’s First Nations Peoples for their ongoing connection to storytelling, country, culture, and community. We also respectfully acknowledge the traditional owners of the land on which we’re all situated and recognise that it was never ceded.

A Strand of Hair.

by Wendy J. Dunn

She turned to her mother

joy shone from her eyes

The day was warm

she was out

not confined at home

so alive

young

She laughed

when a breeze caressed

the uncovered skin

permitted seen by her hijab

she did not know

wind had caught a strand of her hair

She did not know

it had teased it free

for the morality police

to see

for them to arrest her

beat her

until life

left her

all for a strand of hair

Let’s never forget Mahsa Amini.
